The interim City Mayor Karen Tanga Wouapit, and her team have slaved away in the past months to offer a memorable Afcon 2021 to dwellers and visitors of the seaside town.
The youngest City Mayor gave L’Action a rundown of the actions taken by the council to have an exciting Afcon in Limbe, and to offer visitors an enjoyable stay. The CPDM has set up a fan zone – an initiative of the YCPDM – under the patronage of the Limbe City Council. Make no mistake, there are other fan zones in different areas of the city set up by the city council.
Here, it promises to be an exciting cultural rally on matchdays. Dances from all the tribes in Limbe will be showcased at these fan zones, the city Mayor told L’Action. The council will line-up prizes to be won by supporters of football at the fan zones while playing different games, and watching football.
The interim City Mayor says she will attend activities at the fan zone initiated by the CPDM, “as the President of the YCPDM Fako 1C Section.” But as the interim city mayor in the country, she will visit all Afcon fan zones set up by her council.
Limbe is famed for its high standard of cleanliness, but the mayor says the city is to be kept cleaner – nonstop during Afcon. The Mayor wants the town to remain appealing to visitors, including fans of teams playing in Limbe. Other than football, the council is prepared for “guests” that will like to go on a discovery trip. The visitors can take boat rides to historic sites of the town – the slave trade market island, Alfred Saker camp, first Basel church, lighthouse, German wharf, and much more. Also, a guided tour of present-day Limbe is possible for visitors enthused to see the city. Mrs Tanga Karen says the guided tour is packaged with “appropriate” security measures. Limbe is safe than other areas in the South West region, but armed groups have vowed to disrupt the tournament, forcing the council to strongly consider the safety of visitors in all preps. Here, kidnapping for ransom is likely.
Limbe is food-rich, and the council will be trying to get visitors to taste the unique regional cuisine of the South West. The council has picked restaurants to flaunt the gastronomic wealth of Limbe, which is as diverse as the city dwellers.
Limbe City Council authorities have involved chiefs of the city, who will pour libation to “bless the land for Afcon, and wish a perfect harmony of the town with guests”, the city Mayor said. And, the council will use the Afcon to build [on] unity. “We shall use this event to showcase the peace and harmony that exist in the South West region and to meet up with the President’s call of a one and indivisible Cameroon”, the city Mayor said.
Meanwhile, matches of Group F kicked off today in Limbe, a week after the death of the pioneer City Mayor Andrew Montanga.
