The donation comprising mattresses, cartons of soap and mineral water, were distributed to Hospitals treating cholera victims in Limbe last weekend.
To curb the spread of cholera in the city of Limbe, and to relieve victims already affected, the South West Regional Assembly last weekend extended largesse to victims undergoing treatment at the different Health facilities in Limbe. A donation comprising mattresses, cartons of soap, mineral water was to the Directors of the different Health facilities handling cholera cases.
The donation was coordinated by the President of the South West Regional Assembly, Zacheus Elango Bakoma. Evaluated at over FCFA 10 million, the President said the materials will enable the victims recover fast. “The mattresses will help decongest the different wards and create more space for the patients, while the soap will enable them wash their hands regularly. The mineral water will sustain them for some time also. We believe that this little but significant gesture will go a long way to curb the spread of this cholera epidemic. The South West Regional Assembly is calling on the general population to improve upon their hygiene situation. Regular washing of hands after using the toilet, before and after meals, if possible avoid road side food, wash fruits before eating, boil and filter water of doubtful sources before drinking among others. Respecting these measures will help us stay free from cholera pandemic”.
Beneficiaries of the donation at the different health facilities extended gratitude to the Regional Assembly for the prompt response. They attested that the kind gesture has provided hope and relief to health workers and cholera victims. The health experts used the opportunity to caution the population of Limbe and the South West Region to improve on their individual hygiene and equally change their habits. They cautioned that this period being a season of mango fruits that attracts flies, much care should be taken before eating mangoes.
The cholera epidemic hit Limbe weeks ago with the city recording more than 2000 cases. The cause according to officials is the doubtful source of drinking water.
Last week, the city mayor of Limbe, Paul Efome Lisombe Ngale, equally made significant donations to different health facilities to assist cholera victims. The donation comprised mattresses and mineral water. Other organizations like the Development and Advocacy Network, a South West Journalists body, equally made significant donations of pallets of mineral water in health facilities in Limbe and Buea.
