The Widikum Dynamic Farmer’s Cooperative, is the baby that every militant of the CPDM in the Momo South west Section is looking forward to curdle.
This brain child of the Section President and the CPDM is meant to empower farmers in the area both in agriculture and livestock rearing. The project which is in its conceiving and deliberation stage has been welcomed by the people who see in it a golden opportunity that will spur the people to take agriculture more serious. With the challenges of the moment, such as food scarcity and the hikes in prices of commodities; a cooperative will play a significant role in improving the livelihood of this rural community. It will also help identify the role played by agricultural cooperatives in rural development in the era of liberalization especially given the challenges of the time with the crisis in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon.
According to the initiator of the project, Akwa Stephen Tambu “by the creation of a cooperative in Widikum, we hope to give to reduce poverty, create jobs, improve food security, empower the workforce and increase human capital development. Successful cooperatives have over the years been known to benefit their farmer members and others in many ways. We hope that this will be a window to enhance growth and development in our section”, he said. As to how close the project is to its realization, the Section President revealed that “There is already a board in place, and the Headquarters of the cooperative will be in Widikum”, Akwa confirmed.
The CPDM Section President is by the creation of the cooperative giving life to the area anew as he plans to involve everybody and also make sure that proceeds from the farms are harnessed and properly channeled to the market. In his words “poverty will be a thing of the past in Widikum with the coming of this facility”.
Widikum is a very fertile place. It is known for its oil palm and palm oil production which it sells in the sub division and beyond. Farmers will through the cooperative be drilled on better agricultural way to improve their yields and to commercialize their products.
