Sports has been identified as a powerful instrument to promote the values of peace, tolerance and social cohesion in the North West region.
Bamenda, the North West Regional headquarter played host to the sector conference of sports and physical education, held under the theme “sports and physical education, an ideal strategy in the promotion of values and peacebuilding in youth”. During the conference that took place under the patronage of Lele l’Afrique, Governor of the region, stakeholders at the meeting projected sports as a veritable unifying factor if well utilized.
According to Julius Loh Nsom, regional delegate for sports and physical education for the North West region, the choice of the theme was “to enable us, conference participants have an insight on how to avoid deviant behavior in our youths by promoting values needed for living together whenever we have the opportunity to organize or follow up competitions at the local or national level.”
During the various interventions, participants agreed that priority should be given to the promotion of traditional and indigenous sports thereby valorizing the culture of the region.
The regional delegation for sports and physical education was challenged to start nursing talents from the nursery school to higher levels such that it prepares the youths at an early stage to nurture their talents.The sector conference also witnessed the award of certificates of recognition to some meritorious personnel of the sports and physical education family of the region.
