Placed under the patronage of Minister Elung Paul Che, the second edition of the CPDM Unity Cup kicked off in Tombel in fanfare, on October 1, 2023.
It is to pave the way for the celebration of the anniversary of President Paul Biya’s accession to power on November 6 that the inter Subsection tournament was launched last October 1. The Section President for Kupe Muanenguba III, Mbulle Valentine ahead of the kickoff led a caravan animated by the newly acquired band through the town to the Government Primary School Field. The pump drew the attention of many a Tombel denizen as they rushed out to join the march to the community playground, to witness the opening game between Tombel II and IV Subsections. The kickoff was given by Hon. Cecilia Njumbe, personal representative of Minister Elung Paul Che in the presence of Nyama Leonard, Divisional Officer for Tombel and a huge crowd of onlookers.
The month-long Peace Consolidation and Unity football tournament will see the 46 subsections that make up Kupe Muanenguba Section compete for the millions-worth trophy. Ahead of the official launch, several preparatory meetings were held during which the Section president beckoned on the youths of the area to use the tournament to bond with each other as sports especially football is a unifying factor. He called on all subsections to “mobilise for a successful competition, which should demonstrate the values of the CPDM which are peace, unity, inclusiveness and fair play. The football tournament should reinforce our unity, living together and solidarity and consolidate peace in Tombel”. The tournament, brainchild of Mbulle Valentine is just one of several activities the Section executive has carried out since taking up functions after the reorganisation of the Party’s basic organs and which keeps the base vibrant.
Thanks to the collaboration of the militants and living forces of Tombel, the organisers paid no heed to threats from separatist fighters who planned to cause havoc and rallied the population that to a thrilling opening game that saw Tombel IV Subsection beat Tombel II by 2 goals to nil. Winners of the competition will be acknowledged on November 6 as finales will be played on the eve of the anniversary of Paul Biya’s accession to power. The section is divided into six zone. Leaders f each zone will converge on Tombel for playofffs and the finals on November 5.
