Slated to hold from 28 to 30 May 2024, the event has been placed under the patronage of the Head of the State, President Paul Biya.
Some thirty delegations from the entire continent of Africa are expected in Cameroon for the APF Regional Assembly, the proceedings of which will be chaired by the Rt. Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, Speaker of Cameroon’s National Assembly. Speaking at a press briefing on 24 May 2024, Hon. Hilarion Etong, Senior Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly and President of the Cameroon branch of the APF said two themes have been chosen for the event. The MPs will discuss on “Political dialogue and the functioning of State institutions” as well as look into “How useful is Parliamentary diplomacy to French speaking Africa”. To Hon. Hilarion Etong, “the APF will be holding in a new parliamentary context in Cameroon, the advent of the Senate in 2013” making parliament, bicameral, which implies that the APF event equally concerns the senate. That is why the closing session will be chaired by Marcel Niat Njifenji, President of the Senate.
Created in 1967 in Luxemburg, it is worth noting that APF is the representative and consultative assembly of French speaking countries and that adopts resolutions on matters concerning the French speaking community. These are matters that delve into the political, economic, social, cultural, educational and environmental domains. The Yaounde conclave will thus permit the MPs to discuss and exchange ideas for the betterment of member countries.
Besides the Africa Region which is holding its 30th session in Yaounde as from the 28th, there are the America, Europe and Asia Pacific regions. In addition to the delegations expected in Yaounde, the Parliaments of Angola and Sao Tome and Principe will be attending the conference as observers.
