Cameroonians in the North West and South West regions continue registering on voters’ rolls despite threats to discourage them from doing so.
They have been emboldened by the educative message from local authorities of the CPDM in the two regions who have persisted in their call for them to register in their numbers in a bid to contribute in any electoral exercise. The citizens in these regions are braving all odds, to ensure a massive registration. For a people that have been subjected to such untold sufferings the need to make it right cannot be overemphasized. They are learning fast from their mistakes and taking the right decision
The CPDM, through its local authorities in these regions is on all fronts, making use of every means of communication to the greatest number of registered voters. With the deadline of August due in two months only, local authorities are even more determined.
In the Ngoketunjia III section North West region for instance, the section president; David Chindong affirmed that “There is a general interest in people to register. We are now reminding them of the need to do this while there is time given that closure of the exercise points in the horizon. August is barely two months away”.
They have intensified work on the field, making use of new and more effective strategies. Elecam officials who have recently become the targets of enemies of the nation’s peace are given protection by not inviting them to risk areas.
The North West and South West beacon for a total reconstruction. A massive registration by the people of these regions and voting right will go a long way to reshape and reposition them for growth and success. A peaceful and stable atmosphere will also trigger job creation especially for the youth. According to some CPDM section presidents in the North West, “those of voting age who have not had their names registered lack birth certificates or identity cards or both”. Some elite of good will and some militants support the people by facilitation their acquisition of these documents. The other category of persons who might not have registered, David Chindong said “could be students who have been in school. However we are two month to the end and we believe that they will take advantage of the holiday period and register. The other cases could be employees (skilled and unskilled labourers), whose timetables are not friendly with the working hours of Elections Cameroon”. It is hoped that this class of persons will organize themselves, create time to go and register hence avert any negative effects of non-registration. Electoral registers remain open nationwide with citizens of voting age who meet the eligibility till August 30.
