CPDM elite, members of the seven divisional permanent delegations, elected officials, party grass root leaders from the North West region met yesterday Tuesday September 18, 2024 in Yaoundé, for the first time under the aegis of the acting coordinator, Poli Bureau member, Senator Regina Elizabeth Mundi.
efore now such a meeting will take place at the residence of the former prime minister Yang
Philemon, the Head of the CPDM Central Committee Permanent Regional Delegation for the North West region. But: this one held at the residence of Senator Regina Mundi.
Yang is now residing in New York, U.S after he was elected as the President of the United Nations General Assembly. For continuity it was agreed that ace politician and diehard militant Regina Mundi takes over the realm. She is a member of the CPDM Central Committee Permanent Regional Delegation for the North West region.
« You are all cordially invited to a very important North-West CPDM Elite General Meeting at the residence of Sen. Regina Mundi, our Acting Regional Coordinator besides the Belgian Embassy in Bastos on Tuesday, 17th September 2024 at 5.00pm prompt,» the invitation read.
Senator Regina Mundi is the party›s top-ranking militant in the region. She brings political awareness, wealth of experience and a woman›s touch of leadership to the table.
Context Her task will include the celebration of President Paul Biya›s accession to power on November 6, 2024, the Ruby Jubilee of the CPDM on March 24, 2025, preparations towards the Presidential Elections that Cameroon could hold in October
- In-between she has to close the ranks of the party in the region, solve disputes, coordinate fund drives and promote cohesion among militants of the North West region, among other roles.
At the time Senator Mundi is taking over the command baton, the registration on the voter list of the election management body, Elecam, ended in August 2024. Between now and when the list is reopened could be considered a period of evaluation. On January 10, 2024, the Secretary General of the CPDM Central Committee Jean Nkuétè, signed a circular relating to the revision of the electoral list. In this document, Jean Nkuétè recommended that party executives get involved in
“the registration on the electoral lists of duly identified militants, sympathizers, friends and supporters of the CPDM”. There is a question begging for an answer: how many of the targeted electorate were registered in the North West region, what are some of the challenges, and what can be done to up the numbers when registers open in January?
The enrolment on the electoral list was in a context of a drawnout eight-year security crisis. Ghost towns, lockdowns, armed attacks, kidnappings and killings of residents of the region (CPDM supporters often) by spawned armed groups have not stopped. The Party has a role to pay – douse the spiral of violence. Senator Mundi has a task to galvanise the ‹troops› towards peace initiatives. One of such is to convince young adults to drop their weapons and join the disarmament centre in Bamenda. Within the party, she will have to resolve conflicts between elected officials (mayors and MPs) and party leadership at the grassroot, that sometimes involve top government functionaries like ministers, directors of state corporations, and big funders of the Party on the other hand or unknown drummers on the other hand.
Senator Regina needs all hands on deck! She seems to have started on a good footing inviting elite who have not been seen at such meetings in the recent past.
