Championed by CPDM barons of the North West Region, the elite out of empathy for the 439 Bamenda Main Market fire victims of February 22, 2024 raised the sum of 75.1 million to make lighter their loss burden.
he Archbishop of Ba- menda Archdiocese, His Grace Andrew Nkea who headed the distribution committee disclosed that all 439 victims had each received the sum of 171,225 FCFA, as agreed by the elite that the total amount raised be distributed equally. Victims have expressed satisfaction at the genuine benevolence of the elite. In response, they have showered praises to the elite of the North West for the gesture in June 2024.
A statement released by the Archbishop of Bamenda, Andrew Nkea and made public by the initiator of the support drive, Minister Felix Mbayu, all the victims had effectively received the sum of 171,225 FCFA from OPSECS Ltd Bank commercial Avenue.
The comprehensive relief effort was meticulously distributed by a commission of diverse leaders established on June 7, 2024, comprising key community leaders. Members of this committee included the Archbishop of Bamenda, Andrew Nkea, the Executive President of the CBC, representatives from the PCC and Governor’s office, the Traders Association President, the Imam of Bamenda Central Mosque, and Bamenda City Mayor. Archbishop Andrew Nkea praised the commission’s work, noting that the four month process of identifying and sup- porting victims was done with tact and transparency. The distribution was done equitably as ad- vised by one of the region’s elite, Director General of Customs Fongod Edwin Nuvaga.
It is hoped that this support
would significantly relief the fire victims, reignite among the vic- tims a spirit of unity and recon- nection to the elite class of the region. Elites of the region on their part, continue to win hearts of the general public as they have repeatedly come to the aid of the population in times of severe need.
The Bamenda main Market fire incident occurred on the evening of February 22, 2024 at about 7pm, consuming 292 shops to ashes. An evaluation of the level of damage has been conducted by the SDO of Mezam with signifi- cant material and financial losses recorded.
