As Cameroon prepares for the 2025 presidential elections, the National Assembly’s third ordinary session is set against a backdrop of political significance and public expectation.
In his address at the opening plenary sitting on 12 March 2024, Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, Speaker of the National Assembly said “The 2025 State budget on which Government’s agenda for Cameroon in 2025 will be predicated should seek to consolidate achievements, further earn the confidence of the populace and ultimately spur Cameroonians to massively endorse the vision of the Head of State”.
He added that government should do all in its power to organise elections in a peaceful atmosphere and also enable Cameroon to begin 2025 in peace”. These words set the tone for thirty days of intensive work for the nation’s MPs who will in the days ahead start examining the state budget for 2025 fiscal year. Hon. Cavaye underscored the importance of this session, emphasizing that the state budget will not only reflect financial allocations but also serve as a strategic roadmap for the government. The upcoming elections heighten the stakes, making it crucial for the government to consolidate its achievements and foster public confidence in its leadership. This budget will play a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape and ensuring a peaceful electoral process.
The 2025 state budget is being crafted in accordance with guidelines outlined in a circular signed by President Paul Biya, which emphasizes economic growth, social stability, and infrastructural development. Key priorities include revitalizing sectors such as agriculture and industry, particularly through the promotion of local production and import substitution. The budget aims to enhance support for small and medium-sized enterprises, which are vital for job creation, especially among youth. Additionally, it highlights the importance of improving energy supply and addressing urgent environmental concerns, aligning with global sustainable development goals while ensuring that the benefits of growth reach all citizens.
As the National Assembly delves into the intricacies of the budget, the focus will be on creating a financial framework that resonates with the aspirations of Cameroonians. The government aims to address pressing social issues, including healthcare accessibility and urban waste management, while ensuring that the benefits of economic initiatives are felt across all demographics.
