Cameroon’s parliament has diligently examined and debated several significant bills and successfully adopted
the 2025 Finance Bill.
he 3rd and last session of the year, which commenced in November 2024 session was characterized by intense discussions and the passage of several crucial bills. The National Assembly voted on December 8, 2024, to
approve a budget of 7,317.7 billion Francs CFA, marking a modest increase of 0.59% from the previous year’s budget of 7,278.1 billion Francs CFA. This budget aims to sustain a projected growth rate of 4.1% for the upcoming year, despite ongoing economic challenges, including rising living costs and infrastructure concerns. During the plenary session, Minister of Finance Louis Paul Motaze presented the Finance Bill, addressing various concerns
raised like worries regarding the rising cost of living. In response, Minister Motaze assured the assembly of the government’s commitment to controlling inflation and managing the economic landscape effectively. In addition to the Finance Bill, the session also focused on legislation concerning the fisheries and aquaculture sector, which is
vital for the economy and food security in Cameroon. This bill seeks to enhance the management and sustainability of fish eries resources, reflecting the government’s dedication to improving this essential sector. Additionally, the bill to ratify the agreement on criminal police cooperation which aims to strengthen collaboration between Cameroon and other countries in combatting transnational crime. The agreement is designed to enhance the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies in tackling issues such as trafficking, terrorism and organised crime thus promoting regional security and stability.
The November session was notably hectic for MPs, who engaged in extensive discussions and debates on
multiple bills. The urgency was heightened by the need to finalize various legislative proposals before the year-end,
making it a particularly busy period for lawmakers. The session also marked a historic moment with the
inauguration of the new National Assembly complex, a significant gift from the Chinese government. This new facility symbolizes the strengthening ties between Cameroon and China and provides a modern venue for
legislative activities.
As the parliament wraps up this session, the efforts made by the MPs highlight their proactive approach to addressing economic challenges and enhancing governance in Cameroon. Their work remains critical in shaping the future of the nation’s economic landscape.
