Promoting Peace, Social Cohesion : Njie Makongo Uses Universal Language of Sport

Through a football tournament organised in Lysoka, Fako Division of the South West Region, the dynamic youth and CEO of the Njie Makongo Family Hope Foundation is intent on reviving the spirit of camaraderie amongst his peers, in an area grappling with the crisis.

“Peace is our most precious asset. Without peace, we cannot take any sustainable and effective initiative in the interest of our youth and our peoples,” declared President Paul Biya, emphasizing the vital role of harmony in fostering development. The Njie Makongo Family Hope Foundation has taken this message to heart, stepping up to promote peace and social cohesion through a vibrant football tournament in Lysoka and Maumu. By bringing people together through the universal language of sport, the Foundation is not only reviving community spirit but also aligning its efforts with President Biya’s vision for a peaceful and united Cameroon.

The tournament brought together the youth of Lysoka and Maumu, showcasing their talent and passion for football. The final match was a spectacular display of skill and enthusiasm, culminating in Maumu FC taking home the trophy and a cash prize of 100,000 francs, while Lysoka FC received 50,000 francs as runners-up. This event attracted a massive turnout of fans, reflecting the unyielding spirit of the community despite the challenges they face.

Njie Makongo, the Foundation’s Executive Director and a native of Lysoka, expressed gratitude to the Chiefs of the area for their efforts in mobilising the community. His appreciation extended to the Lysoka Area Development Association, whose coordination was pivotal in the tournament’s success. Makongo’s commitment to ensuring that Lysoka and Maumu regain their former glory is evident, as he believes that sports can serve as a powerful tool for uniting and educating the youth.

More than just a sporting event the tournament was a platform for promoting messages of peace and reconciliation.

In addition to the tournament in Lysoka and Maumu, the Foundation organized productive holiday activities in the Bonjongo Court Area in Buea Sub-Division and also Idenau. Local youths expressed excitement as the Foundation organized male and female football competitions, breathing new life into the community after years of stagnation. Observers praised the Foundation for reviving social cohesion and peaceful living. “These tournaments have helped bring back the spirit of togetherness,” remarked a local leader. In an interview, Makongo noted that the recent football tournament significantly contributes to peace efforts amidst the socio-political crisis. He praised local leaders for their remarkable work in fostering peace in the region. He has promised continue supporting community development and peace-building efforts in the area.
