2025 Presidential Elections : South West Chiefs Back Biya

Traditional rulers, during their general assembly held last Saturday, February 22, 2025, endorsed President Paul Biya as their candidate and called on him to launch his campaign in their region.

Over 300 traditional rulers from the South West region have endorsed President Paul Biya as their choice for the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for October this year. Gathering under the umbrella of the South West Chiefs Conference (SWECC) at the Limbe City Council Hall last weekend, the chiefs convened an enlarged elective general assembly. During the meeting, they called on President Biya to be their torchbearer and pleaded with him to launch his presidential campaign in the South West region.

In a motion presented to the Prime Minister’s representative during the conference, the chiefs praised President Biya’s leadership qualities in fostering national unity, peace, and development. They acknowledged the numerous projects completed across the South West region, as well as the appointment of Southwesterners to top-ranking positions, as achievements made possible by President Biya. The motion further stated that the South West chiefs stand united in supporting President Biya as he steers the nation for another seven years. As custodians of tradition and auxiliaries to the administration, the chiefs emphasized that their role in guaranteeing peace and security cannot be undermined. This, they argued, is why they must guide their subjects in choosing the right leaders.

The general assembly marked the end of the two-year mandate of the former executive, headed by HRM Chief Moses Obenofunde, and aimed to establish a new executive to lead the chiefs for another two years.

The event was attended by the Prime Minister’s representative, the Director of Cabinet at the Prime Minister Office Confiance Ebune, as well as other top government officials from the South West region.

The enlarged general assembly also provided an opportunity for the chiefs to evaluate the activities of the outgoing executive over the past two years. They expressed satisfaction with the revival of South West culture, highlighted by the successful organization of the South West Cultural Festival last year in Buea. The chiefs also assessed the state of peace in their respective chiefdoms, noting that most of them had returned to their palaces, with life gradually returning to normal.

Following a successful election, a new executive bureau was established, headed by HRM Chief Dr. Ahmadou Mokube of Bafaka Balue village in Ndian Division. The traditional rulers expressed their gratitude to the Prime Minister, Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute, for his unwavering support of the chiefs’ activities over the past years.
