National Assembly’s Finance Committee Hosts Key Seminar on Local Taxation

In the bid to enhance public financial management, the Finance and Budget Committee of the National Assembly organized a Capacity Building Seminar focused on the implementation challenges of local taxation laws.

This seminar, part of the broader activities of the March session, underscored the Assembly’s commitment to strengthening fiscal policies and improving governance in Cameroon.

The seminar featured key presentations that provided valuable insights into the current landscape of local taxation. Mr. Adrien Tocke, an expert from the Directorate General of Taxes, outlined the necessary reforms within local tax systems, highlighting the existing challenges and proposed solutions. His presentation set the stage for a critical discussion on how local taxation can be optimized to better support regional development.

Another significant contribution came from Mr. Achile Nestor Basahag, who addressed the importance of resource availability and the interoperability of information systems between the Ministry of Finance and decentralized local authorities. His insights emphasized the need for seamless communication and data sharing, which are crucial for effective tax collection and management.

This workshop was particularly important as it aligns with the National Assembly’s ongoing efforts to reform and modernize public financial management. By equipping members of the Finance and Budget Committee and their technical support unit with the necessary skills and knowledge, the seminar aims to foster a deeper understanding of local taxation and its implementation challenges. Such capacity building is essential for developing effective taxation policies that can enhance the country’s economic performance.

The discussions and outcomes from this seminar reflect a proactive approach to addressing fiscal management issues. The commitment to strengthening local taxation not only supports regional governance but also contributes to the overall economic stability of Cameroon.

Moving forward, the insights gained from this seminar will empower committee members to develop strategies that enhance local revenue generation, ultimately benefiting communities across the nation. The Finance and Budget Committee’s dedication to capacity building highlights its vital role in promoting sound fiscal management and ensuring that local taxation serves as a tool for sustainable development.
