Where a Road Passes…

The construction of the Bangem-Nguti road is a game-changer for the people of Kupe Muanenguba division.

The mammoth that gathered at the grandstand named after he who was being thanked at the rally in Bangem – Paul Biya, came in recognition of the end of a journey full of hurdles.  In the common parlance, it would be said that the people have come from far. Before now, traveling to Nguti from Tombel or Bangem,  one was obliged to pass through Meme, Fako and Momo divisions covering over 200km, for a distance of less than 55km. The Deputy Secretary General at the Presidency of the Republic, Elung Paul Che’s words thus resonated well when he said, “The importance of road infrastructure to our community cannot be overstated especially when we reflect over the challenges we have been through over the decades. For too long, our division has not been interconnected by roads”.

Access to essential services was very limited. Due to poor roads, families struggled to access medical care. Farmers faced enormous challenges getting their produce to markets. Children endured long and unsafe journeys to school. The story is changing and the road is now going to serve as the bridge between where the population was and where it is going, according to Minister Elung.  For as he put it, “roads are not just structures of stone and asphalt; they are the veins through which the lifeblood of development flows. Roads connect people, communities and markets; enable communication, commerce and education. They are the building blocks of progress.”

As it stands, the first phase of the project from Bangem to Nyandong is already making an impact, and farmers along the stretch attest that the road will unlock economic opportunities as it will shorten travel time and reduce transportation cost for their produce. They will be able to sell their produce at better prices and local businesses will grow. Thanks to increased accessibility, new ventures will spring up creating a ripple effect of economic activity.

This gift stands in testimony of the visionary leadership of President Paul Biya, who saw the potential of our community and ensured we are no longer left behind” Minister Elung Paul Che noted. This explains why he entreated the population to “guard this precious gift with our hearts and minds, it is meant to serve us first and only a fool can cut down a branch on which he is standing.” To Bidé Cletus Ntube, elite of Kupe Muanenguba, “the road will release the potential of the area in terms of agricultural productivity. This is one of the basins of cocoa production in the country and farmers are now heaving a sigh of relief”.

With the road, the people of Kupe Muanenguba division are poised to reap more benefits and build on the many achievements they have benefited from President Paul Biya’s leadership. As Minister Elung Paul Che put it, the road will transform lives and give hope for a better tomorrow.
