Senators of the North West Region invested by the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, CPDM have through a communique expressed their sympathy to victims of the Bamenda Main Market fire incident of February 22.
In a swift and robust response to recent happenings in the North West Region, they pledged support to victims of the devastating fire at the Bamenda Main Market which consumed some 300 shops. “We stand in solidarity with all those who lost their livelihoods and property in this tragic incident,” the communique declared. “Our deepest sympathy go to the individuals and families facing immense hardship due to this unimaginable loss.”
Beyond expressing sympathy, the Senators emphasized the need for immediate action. They urged the administrative authorities to expedite the investigation process to determine the cause of the fire and ensure accountability. This decisive step, they believe, is crucial for preventing similar tragedies in the future.
The fire incident which touches on the main fiber of Bamenda’s economic hub has registered multiple visitors to the scene including local administrative authorities, traditional and religious leaders. North West Governor, Lele Lafrique during his visit there announced that a commission of enquiry will be set up to thoroughly investigate the cause of the fire incident, and ascertain the damage caused. “We will form a commission to know what led to the fire, those who were affected by the fire and the level of damages incurred by the fire.” Governor Lele said.
Addressing Regional Challenges and Security Concerns
The communique further addressed broader security concerns plaguing the region. The Senators strongly condemned the 11 February attack on innocent children in Nkambe, the burning of heavy machinery and trucks in Ndu and Bafut, and the rampant kidnappings and killings by separatist fighters. They emphasized the critical need for peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis, urging all parties involved to embrace dialogue and lay down arms through the Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration, DDR Centre.
The law makers and Region’s representatives lamented the damage caused by the ongoing conflict in the North West Region. They emphasized the immeasurable human cost and material losses, questioning the motive of the continued crisis. This powerful statement underscores the Senators’ quest together with government to finding a peaceful and sustainable solution for the betterment of the region and its people.
