Youth Day Celebration in Kumba : Unprecedented Turnout of YCPDM Militants, Schools

More than 30 schools and hundreds of YCPDM militants turned out for the 11 February march pass.

For the first time since the out break of the socio-political crisis in the two English speaking regions, the celebration of 59th edition of the National Youth Day in Kumba witnessed a spectacular turnout and fanfare. Nursery, primary, higher and vocational training schools, including the youth wing of the ruling CPDM party, showed up in their number to participate effectively in the celebration, unlike before when fear and threats scared them off. The brightness on the faces of the youth attested to the joy and excitement. Unlike before when few students appeared in assorted wears, this year all pupils and students were clad in their uniforms.

The effervescence that characterized the day was a clear indication that the youths greatly missed such moments. The demonstrations equally indicated that the socio political crisis in most areas in Meme Division is fast fading away. Even the grand stand was jammed to capacity by officials, who for the past years have attended such gatherings in fear.

As they marched past, students brandished placards bearing different messages of peace, unity and living together, while the CPDM youth chanted songs of patriotism and urging President Biya to be their candidate in the up coming presidential election.

Apart from Kumba, other Divisions and Subdivisions in the South West region like Ekondo Titi, Konye, Alou, Tombel, Buea, Limbe, had the same atmosphere of ambiance and fanfare.

From observation across the South West region, it is evident that peace has returned to a greater part of the region, with patches of insecurities limited to some remote villages.
