Blood Donation : NBTS Educates, Mobilizes Young Cameroonians

The National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS), in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Civic Education, has launched a week-long sensitization and blood donation campaign at the esplanade of the National Museum in Yaoundé.

Within the framework of the celebration of the 2026 Youth Day, the NBTS, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Civic Education, has begun a week-long campaign aimed at raising awareness among young people on the importance of voluntary and regular blood donation. The campaign is taking place at the esplanade of the National Museum in Yaoundé, currently transformed into a Youth Village hosting various activities and attractions for thousands of young visitors.

Under the supervision of the General Manager of the NBTS, Professor Dora Mbanya, the campaign is being carried out in partnership with several associations advocating for blood donation. Teams of peer educators from the NBTS and partner organizations including SOS Don de Sang, NOLFORWOP, Lifeline, Club 25, and Humanitaire Possible Cameroun are engaging youths through one-on-one conversations, educational talks, and interactive sessions to dispel myths and misconceptions surrounding blood donation.

From February 2 to February 10, visitors to the Youth Village are being sensitized on the lifesaving benefits of donating blood, particularly at a time when the demand for blood in hospitals remains constant and often exceeds supply. In addition to sensitization activities, blood drives will be organized to collect blood from willing donors, providing an opportunity for young people to take immediate action and contribute directly to saving lives.

Armed with educational brochures and enrolment lists, peer educators are encouraging young participants to commit to becoming regular voluntary donors.

This initiative forms part of the NBTS’s broader strategy to bridge the gap of ignorance surrounding blood donation by clearing misconceptions and promoting accurate information among the public. By targeting youths who represent a large and dynamic segment of the population, the NBTS is investing in a sustainable donor base for the future. Through continuous sensitization, community outreach, and partnerships with civil society organizations, the NBTS remains on all fronts, one activity at a time, to ensure that no patient dies due to the lack of blood.
