MPs’ MandateExtension Bill Tabled

The text was received during a Chairmen’s Conference chaired by Speaker Datouo Théodore.

Several key activities unfolded at the Paul Biya Glass House.
Proceedings began with a plenary sitting devoted to the confirmation of members of the General Committees. The session was presided over by Speaker Datouo Théodore.
Attention, however, quickly shifted to the Chairmen’s Conference convened to receive Bill No. 2092/PJL/AN. The text, transmitted by the President of the Republic Paul Biya, proposes an extension of the term of office of Members of the National Assembly.
It was declared admissible, clearing the way for the next stages of the legislative process.
In substance, the bill provides for the extension of the current parliamentary term beyond its normal expiry date. It maintains all prerogatives of MPs during the extended period, ensuring that the National Assembly continues to function without interruption. The text is expected to be presented and defended before the Committee on Constitutional Laws in the days ahead.
If eventually adopted, the extension would allow the present legislature to remain in office until new elections are organised. This would ensure continuity in legislative work and avoid any institutional gap.
At the same time, it means that the renewal of the National Assembly will not take place immediately as initially expected, giving more time for the preparation of the electoral process in Cameroon.
