Twin Election in View : North West Voter Rolls Swell

Fresh registration figures fromElections Cameroon (Elecam) for the North West region paint a picture of an active electorate consciousness.

Between January 1 and July 1, 2026, a cumulative 22,033 newvoters, with 11,388 men and 10,645 women added to the regional electoral register.According to divisional breakdowns compiled by Elecam, Mezam Division alone accounts for 11,561 of these new entrants, more than half the regional total, cementing its status as the most decisive electoral battleground in North West. Donga-Mantung (2,741) and Momo (2,529) follow at a distance, while Menchum (1,939), Boyo (1,380), Bui (1,196) and Ngoketunjia (687) trail behind – a hierarchy that will inspire how parties allocate campaign resources in the months ahead.

The weekly output of 746 new registrants according to Elecam officials in the North West, while respectable, is unlikely to be sufficient if turnout ambitions for 2027 are to be realized. With the register closing on August 31 and not reopening until January 2027, the coming six weeks represent a narrow and decisive window for political actors to shape the electorate that will decide their fate.

This is where the political calculus becomes urgent. The North West’s traditional opposition strongholds have shown signs of stirring after a period of relative dormancy since 2018, with grassroots mobilization reportedly picking up pace in several divisions, with Mezam on a high guage. Should this resurgence translate into disciplined registration drives targeting the sizeable youth and first-time voter population, it could meaningfully alter the balance of power in constituencies long considered safe.

For the ruling Cpdm, the message from these numbers should be unambiguous: complacency is not an option. The party’s dominance in the North West cannot be assumed to be self-sustaining, particularly in divisions like Boyo, Bui and Ngoketunjia where registration numbers remain comparatively modest. Aggressive, well-organized voter registration campaigns not just at the level of party elites but down to the subsection, cell and village level will be essential if the CPDM hopes to consolidate, let alone expand, its footholds ahead of 2027.
