The Speaker of the National Assembly observed that despite the delays recorded due to the Covid 19 pandemic, work is advancing.
A visibly satisfied Cavaye Yegiue Djibril toured the site last Monday 22, 2021 accompanied by Hon. Théodore Datouo Vice Speaker of the National Assembly and the Gaston Komba, SG of the Chamber amongst other. Starting at the Banquet hall section, where he was told that work is almost complete. He then moved to the 400-seater plenary hall, which according to explanations now awaits roofing. At every stop, the Speaker was updated on the level of advancements and enlightened on what was being done.
In his explanation, the President of the Follow-up Committee, Hon. Théodore Datouo, said the hemicycle was 98 percent gone same for the banquet hall. The 14-storey office tower is at 20 percent. The China Urban construction company has nine months to raise and complete the main buildings.
Later same day, a Parliamentary Action Day for Peace was observed by the people’s representatives, in a ceremony that was presided by Abba Alim, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly. The MPs examined the contribution of sports and culture in this light. Sports and culture are unifying factors through which the message of peace can be transmitted. At a time when this prized commodity is being threatened in the country, it is essential to find ways of closing the fissures.
If peace were a commodity, it would most certainly sell very high as without it, the development of a country would be at stake. Several factors contribute in the preservation of peace especially in times of crisis. Attendees were made to understand that through culture and sports people can live in harmony and overcome all threats to peace. In attendance were religious associations, civil society organisations and National Commission for human rights and freedoms. Representatives of the aforementioned bodies voiced actions geared towards promoting togetherness and harmony in society. For the Universal Peace Federation in Cameroon, it was important to bring the understanding of UPF in the building of peace. Its representative noted that it is a fundamental responsibility of the citizens of this nation beginning from the basis- the family to foster living together. To him, to eliminate conflict and alienation, “we have to build durable relationships that are established to foster peace, unity and harmony. Principles like living for the sake of others are not being kept, reason there is so much disunity and misunderstanding”. The Church has its own responsibilities in making the society better, reason it “educates its faithful to respect God’s word which should arm them spiritually to face life’s challenges and be good role models for other citizens”.
The Cameroon chapter of the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace, AIPP led by Brigitte Emabot thus, through this meeting found common ground to foster peace.
