Bamali/Bamesing : Promoting National Unity through Sports in Yaounde

Two sister communities from the Ngoketunjia division in the restive Northwest, on Saturday 17 May displayed love for peace, solidarity and harmony in a remarkable sports and cultural event at the Ekie Brasseries Stadium.

The grand unity football and cultural encounter aimed at fostering social cohesion amongst displaced populations and the strengthening of youth collaboration. The event brought together sons and daughters of the two communities, many of whom now live outside their native villages due to the socio-political crisis that has affected the region.

The highly anticipated football match which ended in a resounding victory for the Bamali team was the kicker. The encounter ended with Bamali defeating Bamesing by five goals to one (5-1).

One of the major highlights of the day was the outstanding performance of a young football talent from Bamali, Rogers also called Ndi Maria. The young man singlehandedly scored all five goals for his team.

This young striker captured the admiration of supporters with his exceptional display of skill and sportsmanship. Many expressed that Rogers’ football journey should exceed local levels, propelling him to national and international platforms.  This according to Issa Pu facilitator at the event, “this talent in Ndi Maria if properly groomed will make him a figure of pride for the Bamali community, Ngoketunjia division and Cameroon at large”.

Beyond football the event also featured rich cultural displays, traditional performances and addresses from community leaders and heads of cultural associations.

Speakers emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence, unity, mutual support and community development even away from home.

The youths were encouraged to embrace sports and cultural identity as tools for peacebuilding and self-development. Members of both communities took the commitment to remain united, foster growth and development and to initiate more of such activities to promote collective growth as a commendable grassroot peacebuilding method.

Other aspects included the exhibition of their cultural identity, the handing over of the sport trophy to the winners and the public acknowledgement of the best player.
