At Session Before Presidential Poll : Speaker Calls for Peaceful Elections

In his opening speech to the June session of parliament, Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, sent a strong message to all stakeholders, urging them to exercise restraint, act responsibly, and with patriotism.

As the October 2025 presidential election draws near, the stakes are high and the expectations are palpable. “We must not forget that Cameroon will continue to exist after October 2025 and would need the same stakeholders to overcome present and future challenges,” the Speaker emphasized, underscoring the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the country, even as the election campaigns approach.

The Speaker’s words also highlighted the impact of the upcoming election in showcasing Cameroon’s ability to organize major events, including elections. “The October 2025 presidential election would afford us another opportunity to showcase Cameroon’s ingrained capacity to organise major events, including the organisation of elections,” he said.

However, the Speaker also noted that a good turnout in the election would be a major challenge for Cameroon to overcome. To achieve this, he urged Cameroonians of voting age to massively enroll in the electoral register, emphasizing that only those duly enrolled would be eligible to vote. In a bid to facilitate this process, the Speaker welcomed the new measures taken by the Head of State to simplify the process of issuing national identity cards. He congratulated the authorities responsible for issuing identity cards, noting that the innovations introduced have made the process less cumbersome.

The Speaker’s call to action extended to political elites and parliamentarians, whom he urged to exude generosity and true militancy by helping needy compatriots obtain national identity cards and enroll in the electoral register.

As Cameroon hurtles towards the October 2025 presidential election, the MPs are of the opinion that the Speaker’s words serve as a timely reminder of the importance of peace, stability, and civic responsibility. According to Hon. Ngalle Daniel, not much is to be expected of this session apart from scrutinizing bills and following up government action. The general hope is that Cameroonians would heed the call to action and make their voices heard in the upcoming election as it is up to the citizens to shape the future of the country.
