Solar Electrification Project : 200 Localities Will be Lit

President Paul Biya has signed Decree No. 2025/539 of December 3, 2025, authorizing the signing of a credit agreement with the African Export-Import Bank (AFREXIMBANK) to finance a major rural electrification project.

The decree formally empowers the government to enter into the financing agreement for the « Project for Rural Electrification of 200 Localities by Photovoltaic Solar Systems. » This initiative aims to bring sustainable electricity to remote communities through solar energy, aligning with national goals to improve energy access and promote renewable sources.
This project represents a step in Cameroon’s energy strategy. Over 40% of the rural population currently lacks access to electricity, which hampers development in sectors like education, health, and small business. The use of solar power is particularly strategic, leveraging the country’s significant solar potential and providing a sustainable alternative to expensive and logistically challenging grid extensions.
The government has framed the project as critical to inclusive development and regional balance, aiming to improve the quality of life for thousands of households while contributing to the national fight against climate change.
With the presidential decree now in place, the Ministry of Economy, Planning, and Regional Development is expected to proceed with the final signing of the credit contract, allowing the project to move into its implementation phase.
