Maize Farming Among Women : Senator Fointama Hilda Supports Boyo’s Mainstay

The Member of Parliament from Boyo division in the North West Region has donated one ton of improved maize seeds to each of its four subdivisions Fundong, Belo, Njinikom and Bum — for distribution to women farmers.

The objective     is     to strengthen agricultural productivity and support rural women whose livelihoods depend largely on farming. This was during the run-up to the celebration of International Women’s Day 2026. Across the division maize is more than just a crop. It is central to daily life and nutrition, forming the basis of corn fufu, a staple meal in many households. By providing improved seeds with higher yield potential, Senator Fointama aims to help families increase their harvests, improve household food security and generate income through the sale of surplus produce. Beyond feeding families, improved harvests are expected to contribute to better living conditions, enabling parents to support their children’s education and meet basic household needs. The donation also builds on Senator Fointama’s previous interventions in support of agriculture. In May 2025, during the 53rd National Day celebrations in Fundong, she donated farming tools including cutlasses, hoes, wheelbarrows and watering cans to farming groups across the division. On that occasion, she encouraged farmers to remain resilient and reaffirmed her commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture in Boyo.

The latest gesture has been warmly welcomed by local authorities and beneficiaries. Speaking on behalf of Belo Council, the Second Deputy Mayor, Lot Ndimbuuh, praised the Senator for her continued attention to the needs of the population, particularly those displaced by the crisis.

For many women farmers, the support carries deep meaning. Ngoh Joy, a member of the Belo Conscious Mothers, expressed gratitude and prayed that God would bless the Senator for her generosity and grant her wisdom to continue serving the people.

Distribution of the seeds began Wednesday, March 4, 2026, in Bamenda for Belo women, while farmers in Bum, Njinikom and Fundong will receive their consignments in their respective council areas.
