Wabane : 22 teams lock horns for Mayor’s Cup

The 2026 edition of the Wabane Mayor’s Cup was launched last weekend with 22 teams across the municipality competing for the mouth watering cash and other prizes. 

The football pitch of Government Technical College, GTC Ntemnzem, Wabane, was full to capacity as locals turnout to witness the official launching of this year’s Mayor’s Cup. The municipality of Wabane in Lebialem Division of the South West region, is already in the mood of euphoria and fantasy, with matches played three times a week across the different quarters. The 2026 edition witnessed an increase in the number of competing teams, with almost all areas of the municipality represented.

Launched under the theme « One people, one vision, one prosperous Wabane municipality », this year’s competition is aimed at strengthening unity, love and peace among the population, keep the youthful population busy during the holidays and develop hidden talents among the youths.

During the launching ceremony, the mayor of Wabane council, Nembo Ketu Israel, called on the youths to exercise fair play, friendliness and love for one another. To the mayor, the competition is a form of communing with the population, assist the farming population and promote the spirit of living together. The mayor disclosed that at the end of the competition, the finalists will receive rewarding cash prize, as well as farms inputs to support them in their farming activities. Mayor Nembo thanked the population of Wabane for their steadfastness and loyalty to the ruling CPDM party, and the political leaders of Lebialem, which according to him has greatly helped to foster development of the municipality.

On his part, the Divisional Officer of Wabane Subdivision, Njimah Mama, appreciated the initiative of the mayor in keeping the youth busy. The DO noted that such move is acting as a bond for the community and has greatly helped to restore peace and stability in the subdivision.

The tournament dubbed « Wabane Mayor’s Holiday Cup », which kicked off last July 7, is expected to end on August 24, with the grand finale.
