Boosting Local Revenue : Mbonge, Kumba II Councils Acquire New Trucks

The 40 ton trucks will be used to clear waste as well as to generate revenue through rents for the different municipalities.

Mbonge and Kumba II Councils in Meme Division have acquired brand new 40 ton trucks. The 40 ton trucks, acquired recently at the sum of over FCFA 80 million each, will be used to generate internal revenue as well as serve as waste disposal van for the municipalities.
Presenting the trucks to administration and councilors, the Senior Divisional Officer for Meme, Chamberlin Ntou’Ou Ndong, lauded the initiative to improve the on waste disposal challenges of their municipalities. The SDO urged the municipal authorities to exploit the new equipment to improve on the revenue of their council.
Reacting during the handing over of the trucks, the mayor of Kumba II, Mbachu Jacob Kay, expressed gratitude to the Minister of Decentralization and Local Development for making funds available for the realization of the giant project. He said through the special Decentralization fund from MINDDEVEL, to the tune of FCFA 100 million yearly, Kimba II decided to channel it share to the purchase of a truck. The mayor said that apart from serving the local population in the dispose of waste, the truck will be placed at the disposal of economic operators and individuals for rent. Revenue from hire of the trucks will be plough back to other socio-economic projects in the municipality, the mayor stated.
The mayor of Mbonge council, HRH chief Daniel Matta Mokambe remain confident that the positive outcome of the truck will be reflected in the increase of the council administrative and management accounts.
Internal revenue generation has been a challenging tasks for most councils, Councils in the two English speaking regions of Cameroon.
On several council meetings, the supervisory authorities have sounded warnings to mayors and treasurers on the need to improve on revenue collection.
