It is the heart of summer holidays and the YCPDM Section President for Fako IC, Wouapit Karen has devised a scheme that would not only entertain militants of CPDM but all young boys and girls of the municipality and also keep them out of mischief. As the First deputy Mayor of Limbe III, Wouapit Karen Tanga has realised that a good number of youths consume drugs and the growing number of addicts is quite worrisome. She has painstakingly made trips to primary and secondary schools to dissuade children of school going age from engaging in drug consumption. Having noticed an increase in crime wave in some parts of the municipality, she blames it on the rampant intake of narcotics and has thus waged a war of cleansing the area to safeguard the children’s future. In light of opening a rehabilitation centre to cater for drug addicts, she has championed the youth empowerment tournament that will serve as a forum to sensitise and educate holiday makers on the adverse effects of consuming and dealing in narcotics while offering help to those who want to quit the habit.
According to her “football is a rallying sport and we hope to use this opportunity to create awareness amongst this vulnerable segment of our society. This first edition of the football tournament will set the pace for others as we intend to harness the benefits of having many youths in one place to further our stride in ridding the municipality of drugs through communication and interaction”. This first edition, the kick-off of which will be given on the 23rd of July has been placed under the theme “Limbe III free from drugs”. Eight teams drawn from Bimbia, Mondoli and Man O’ War bay villages, which make up the municipality will participate in the tournament. The organiser says amongst other gifts, the champion will bag CFAF 1.5million. Other teams participating will equally take home prizes under such categories as best fan club, best fair play as well as freestyle painter.
In line with President Paul Biya’s vision for youths, Mayor Wouapit Karen says as the country’s future leaders, youths need to be in the right mind set to benefit from plans being made for them as well as contribute in the development of the country. She hopes to further assist youths through the Wouapit Foundation, a rehabilitation centre established to cater for drug addicts.
