Circular Economy : PANCEC Seeks Greater Exposure

Members of the Parliamentary network for Circular Economy PANCEC, headed by Hon. Ngala Gerald have taken new commitments to achieve goals set regarding the development of this model of economy.

Circular Economy is a model of production and consumption, which involves sharing, leasing, reusing, refurbishing and recycling existing waste materials to keep products in circulation for as long as possible in the economy. Households and Councils produce huge quantities of domestic and industrial waste. These different types of waste could both be recycled and used in the production of biogas and even electricity. By recycling household waste, the population would be helping in reducing floods caused by poorly disposed of waste, pollution and would even create green jobs. And so this year, PANCEC intends to do advocacy, build the capacities of stakeholders through national and international symposiums and promote circular economy through trade fares.
The meeting of members of the Parliamentary network which held in the side lines of the ongoing parliamentary session was amongst others to assess the activities of the past year, examine the achievements of 2021 and discuss various difficulties encountered. Members also established a new plan of action, with objectives which according to Hon. Ngalla though challenging were achievable if only all could put hands on deck. A major worry for the network is sourcing funds and technical support to help in the promotion of circular economy. This coupled with Covid-19 were remarked as impediments but which nonetheless did not stop the successful organization of an information and capacity building workshop for members of parliament on the circular economy and its legal framework in Cameroon. “Several meetings with some major actors on the development of the circular economy were held and possibilities to organize a national trade fair to show the potentials of the circular economy in Cameroon while promoting this currently fashionable economy model emerged” Hon Ngalla added.
The desire of PANCEC, the activities of which were launched in 2020 is for Circular Economy to be incorporated in the development of policies in the management of decentralized structures in order to encourage the transition from linear to circular economy. “We want to play our role in the decentralisation process by sensitizing mayors on how they can transform waste into worth, make them financially independent through models, financial partners and expertise we will bring in” Hon. Ngalla quipped.
